TORRE DE VILLAVERDE

Values:
We call
TORRE DE VILLAVERDE to our Extra Virgin Olive Oil,

Because like the Tower from which it takes its name, it is produced with the ambition of lasting over time.

The TORRE DE VILLAVERDE also known as the Castle of Fernán Martínez de los Molinos is located on the left bank of the Guadalquivir River, just 2 kms. from the town of Fernán Martínez de los Molinos. MONTORO and on the same route that the Roman Via Augusta followed as it passed through Montoro and through the Cordovan countryside.

Of great importance during the Reconquest and the noble conflicts of the Middle Ages, its origin is attributed to an ancient Albarran Tower of Arab origin, although it is already in 1472 when we have documentary evidence of its existence.

TORRE DE VILLAVERDE STORY

Listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1985.

The TOWER OF VILLAVERDE, also known as the Castle of Fernán Martínez de los Molinos, is located on the left bank of the Guadalquivir, just 2 kms. from Montoro in the heart of the Cordovan countryside. As demonstrated by the archaeological remains found in the vicinity, it is confirmed that its location has been used by different civilisations for more than 2,500 years.

The economic and administrative centre of the Señorío de Villaverde, dependent on the House of Aguayo for more than 500 years, its largest extension was made up of seven farmhouses and more than 1,800 hectares of olive and cereal crops, occupying both banks of the River Guadalquivir along the municipalities of Montoro, Villa del Río and Bujalance.

The origin of its current construction dates back to 1472, when Diego de Aguayo y Cárcamo, after resolving the noble disputes that had caused its demolition, obtained a royal privilege from Enrique IV to rebuild the old Arab tower of Fernán Martínez de los Molinos.

Although cereal crops and livestock farming predominated in its origins, there is evidence of olive cultivation on its lands from the beginning of the 19th century (1809), as the following document confirms:

Application by Juan de Aguayo y Manrique 11th Lord of Villaverde to the Town Council of Bujalance:

[Juan de Aguayo y Manriqueasks for permission to remove the oak and chaparral trees that are on ten bushels of land called ‘El Chaparral’ belonging to an estate he owns in the district of Montoro, in order to plant them with olive trees, and to cut and thin out what is appropriate in the poplar groves and orchards belonging to the estate].

The Lordship of Villaverde has given its name to titles of nobility. “Marqués de Villaverde” current ‘Marquisate of Santaella’ granted by Philip IV in 1649 and also to that of “Marqués de Villaverde de Aguayo” granted by Ferdinand VII in 1820.
